Explore Award Activities
Each Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award offers one or more of the following activities
Research
Research encompasses various types of research activities such as scientific research, practice-based research, quantitative research, qualitative research, and creative research. There are several settings where research can be conducted, including labs, fields, archives, and artist residencies. It may be applied, clinical, or experimental. It can involve looking at laws, procedures, ideas, practices, relationships, and artistic and musical creations in order to assess or provide new information. Publications (books, journal articles, screenplays, etc.), conference presentations, creative and musical creations, exhibitions, performances, films, and patents are examples of quantifiable (concrete) outputs.
Teaching – Teaching encompasses not only classroom instruction but also guest lecturing, conducting workshops and seminars, and participating in other relevant activities. Undergraduate and graduate courses are usually taught in classrooms; the scholar may either create the courses or have the host institution prescribe them. The scholar may choose to teach or co-teach the courses. The host institution and the prize both have an impact on the teaching burden. Academics can also offer advice to graduate students, help with thesis advising, and consult on developing research capability.
Teaching/Research – Numerous grants enable recipients to carry out the aforementioned study and teaching. Certain awards specify the proportion that needs to be allocated to teaching instead of research, but other awards allow candidates to choose the exact percentage distribution.
Professional Projects – The Professional Project activity type gives experts and artists from a range of disciplines a chance to collaborate with overseas organizations to investigate a subject linked to their area of expertise without having to address a predetermined research question. Professional projects can include arranging exhibitions, performances, or musical compilations; preparing print materials (books, articles, or reviews); exchanging knowledge with other professionals; participating in public events; visiting organizations in the applicant’s field; professional consultations; artist residencies; public lectures; mentoring; and other appropriate professional activities.
